Broke (and I can't remember the last time I broke a string)

I can't remember the last time I broke a string. Granted, I usually use Larsens/Jargars/Spirocores. This A string (the stark gauge) just did not want to go above G#. (Grooves and everything are not an issue.) I managed to raise it to 440 once, but only by basically maxing out my fine tuner. The second time, hours later, when I tried, carefully, to raise it to pitch with the peg, it blew out. I like the D string because it is so wet/spacious, but the medium A is only 36 lbs (below average for a steel A string) and is much thinner than the 33-pound D string (ABOVE average for a steel D string). The stark A has 5 POUNDS higher tension than the medium! The set is so unbalanced, not to mention poorly marketed (I'm talking about the disastrous initial release and the vastly different rerelease). Flexocor covers a nice niche (with its place on the wet/dry spectrum), but Pirastro just isn't trying to make it viable, and I'm not about to gamble on another fragile A string.
